Gustav Mahler’s Der Abschied

A facsimile from the Gustav Mahler Stichting Nederland

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Dutch Mahler Society the Board proudly presents a facsimile edition of Mahlers manuscripts of 'Der Abschied' (the Farewell), the sixth movement of das Lied von de Erde (the Song of the Earth), which includes the manuscripts of both the Partiturentwurf (draft orchestral score) and the Clavierauszug (the Particel, short score).

In December 1917, the great Dutch conductor Willem Mengelberg conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. Following that performance, Alma Mahler presented Mengelberg the two manuscripts of Der Abschied. Alma included the note ‘To the Friend of Gustav Mahler… The most wonderful interpreter of his work, Willem Mengelberg’

The Gustav Mahler Stichting Nederland has produced a facsimile set of the two scores in a box.
The set is offered in the same format as presented by Alma Mahler to Mengelberg. It consists of:

  • A beautiful box, wrapped in black paper ~ 37 x 29 x 4 cm (~ 14.5” x 11.5” x 1.5”).
  • The particel (‘Clavierauszug’), 19 pages plus 12 cover pages.
  • The orchestral score (‘Partitur’), 43 pages plus 12 cover pages.
  • A textbook in English and German, 40 pages plus 8 cover pages.
It contains introductions by Dr. Frits Zwart, director of the Netherlands Music Institute,
Dr. Eveline Nikkels, chair of the Gustav Mahler Stichting Nederland and an article by the late Edward Reilly, musicologist, and one of the foremost American Mahler scholars.
The textbook includes drawings and photos.

The weight of the set is 2.4 kg.

The two manuscripts give us a unique chance to take a closer look at the working process of the composer, and in this particular instance at his most personal work.

This unique set is unfortunately sold out and can no longer be acquired at the Gustav Mahler Stichting Nederland.
