"Dr Landauer bringt jetzt mein Mahlerbuch heraus. Die Stunde ist ungünstig - aber wann wird sie günstiger sein?", wrote Alma Mahler to Rudolf Mengelberg on 9 February 1940, on the eve of the publication of her book, Gustav Mahler: Erinnerungen und Briefe. From 1938, after the Anschluss, there was no more room in Vienna for a book on Gustav Mahler, a publication with a 'Jewish touch'.

Consequently, Alma Mahler decided to defect to Amsterdam and contact publisher Allert de Lange there. An extensive correspondence with Walter Landauer, head of the German-language department of this publisher, followed. Alma also maintained contact with literary critic Ernst Polak, who provided her manuscript with critical comments and did not spare her in the process

In the recently published book Briefwechsel Alma Mahler - Allert de Lange Verlag included a total of 134 letters containing the complete correspondence between Alma and the publisher. The most relevant letters to and from Ernst Polak have also been published. This beautiful edition features an extensive introduction and footnotes for each letter. The book is published by the Gustav Mahler Foundation Netherlands and edited by Dr Eveline Nikkels and Dr Matthijs Boumans.
