There are no moving images of Gustav Mahler and no recordings of his voice, but there are photographs, lyrics and music. These have been brought together into one in this brand new film: The Mahler Monologues.
This is neither a historical nor chronological approach, but a formula through which Mahler himself speaks to us.
The Mahler Monologues paint a picture of the man Gustav Mahler, who struggled with life and with himself, but who could be cheerful, loving and moody, in short: as in his music. He ís his music. Music in which we too feel a reflection and thus recognition of ourselves.
Gustav Mahler is played phenomenally by Gijs Scholten van Aschat.
The Gustav Mahler Stichting Nederland is proud to present this English-language film on DVD and hopes to have created a very special, never-before-seen image of Mahler. The idea and first libretto originated with chairman Eveline Nikkels, who found in director Joost Honselaar the perfect partner to The Mahler Monologues to be realised.
